In a social game of snooker it happened that a red and the cue ball became jammed together across the centre pocket. So come on you rule experts, what should now happen?
Dagley wins the pro-Am at Basingstoke defeating Davis Rees 404 to 105. In earlier rounds Dagley knocked out Russell, while Rees knocked out Foldvari.
In the CIU Comp, a name from the past comes in to focus. David Edwards defeated Freddy Speight in the semi-final. I recall in the mid-1980s having to play Freddy in the Hammersmith Individual Billiards. Freddy was a very good hazard player in and the ordinary course of things I expected to be well hammered. In the event in the game of 500 up on my home club table, a very tight, but very true table at 4 lengths, Freddy couldn’t crack it until it was too late. I still feel he left the club wondering why he lost. Such is life.
Mike Russell wins the British Under 19 title
Ken Shirley wins the Eng. Am Title defeating Mike Russell in the final by 3 games to 1, in games of 300 up, Russell being the youngest ever finalist in the Comp. It was said that the changed format from the 2 hours sessions to best of 5, 300 up, accounted for the lack of breaks of any consequence.
Dagley wins the Humberside pro-Am, defeating Ken Shirley 697 to 527 in a 2 hour final. In the semis Dagley beat Russell by 612 to 315 and Shirley defeated John Murphy by 660 to 254
The MagnaGrip chalk holder is being marketed.
In two more pro-Ams, Dagley wins at Southend defeating Mike Russell by 426 to 154, and making a break of 350 in his semi win against Arthur Winn. In the pro-Am at Ilford Wildman came through to defeat Tony Mackinder by 369 to 235. This tournament was somewhat topsy-turvy. Gilchrist defeated Russell. Rees defeated Dagley. Smokey lost to Wildman and Mackinder defeated Gilchrist. That was the beauty of the blind draw at these pro-Ams - unlike Death and Taxes, nothing was guaranteed.
Dagley wins the pro-Am at Leeds defeating Eugene Hughes by 396 to 230, with runs of 24 and 269 on the day. Gilchrist had a break of 262 in his starting match, but lost to Dagley in the Qtrs.
Bob Marshall at 76, wins the Oz Am Title for the 21st time defeating Phil Tarrant 2216 to 1479, in a 6 hour final. His best breaks were 218 and 219 with 20 other centuries in the round robins. In his last 16 match against Neil Croft, Marshall had no less than 5 centuries and one double. That is some going for a man of 76. It reminds me of Murt O Donoghue’s efforts when he made a break of over 1300 in his mid 70’s. Age shall not weary us,
Brian Kirkness wins the NZ title for the fourth time. The legendary Murt O Donoghue was in attendance to watch the final.
Raymond Ceulemans, from Belgium, regarded as “the Lindrum of the Carom game” has been accepted as a member of the WPBSA. Did he subsequently play in any top class English Billiard games?
